How Are We Different from Other League's?
We teach concepts, not just skills
To play the game intelligently, players must not only be able to dribble, pass, and shoot well; they must also understand conceptually how to dribble productively, why its important to throw a sure pass rather than a maybe pass, and the difference (objectively) between a good shot and a poor shot, and many other concept-based tactics that apply to each of these skills. An understanding of the conceptual underpinnings of these skills separates highly skilled, but ineffective players from highly skilled, conceptually sound and effective players. Good coaches know and value this important distinction. At Top Gun Basketball League, players will be taught skills in the context of a sound, concept-based basketball value system. Players spend quality learning time on the court. They are learning, not merely playing. What the athletes learn will be immediately reinforced on the court in carefully designed drills to increase the likelihood that the concepts will “take” in these game-like practice situations. One of the most enjoyable experiences for us is to see taught concept become a “click moment” habit on the court. Your Top Gun Basketball League Season experience is unique. It is more than just a season league.
We Believe Mistakes Are Learning Tools
Failure is the seed of learning. Top Gun Basketball League teaching approach welcomes mistakes. Each mistake is a “teachable moment”, and we want each player to check their fear of failure on the court. On each and every possession in the game of basketball, there are numerous mistakes made. Our goal is to teach our athletes to aspire to minimize, not eliminate mistakes, and to accept the reality that there has never been a “perfectly” played basketball game, or even a perfectly played possession. We will teach our athletes not only how to minimize mistakes, but also how to respond to mistakes productively and intelligently in ways that will good coaches will value. When our athletes return the following season, we hope that their mistake/response reflex will be on high alert!
We value and teach leadership skills
Whether you are a point guard or a post player, you must be willing to lead. We teach leadership tactics because they are vital to team and individual success. “Leadership” is a vague concept that can take many forms and has become a cliché in our sports culture. We will teach practical, common sense leadership concepts that are adaptable to each player’s unique personality and standing on their team. You can be a leader by example, or a vocal leader. You can even be a “shy” leader. What matters most is that you understand the psychology of leadership, how easy it really is, and that communication, both verbal and non-verbal, really makes a difference in the game of basketball.

Basketball Heighten Senses...
What is basketball sense?
Basketball sense can be characterized as the action of doing something with the full intent of accomplishing a logical objective, whether it is conscious or non-conscious. There are two types of basketball senses. Some people has inherent basketball sense in that they know what they must do on the basketball court even if he is not practice with his teammates or it's a streetball game. Others have acquired basketball sense in that drills and training have been used to shove an ideal response for a certain stimulus. This is usually done by countless repetitions of carefully simulated scenarios of a situation. Both types of basketball sense are needed for a powerful basketball player. For the acquired basketball sense, rules and principles needed to develop acquired basketball sense will be laid out. Meanwhile, for inherent basketball sense, things to be cautious about when using it.
Acquired basketball sense:
Here are a set of rules for you to remember that will make you a sensible player that can fit in most basketball teams:
- Always aim for an easy shot instead of taking a hard shot
- Give the ball to the open person
- Avoid unnecessary penetration of the paint because you get in the way of your driving teammates
- When you are trying to cut, cut inside, never outside
- Screen an opposing player on his blind side
- Box out your opponent whenever there is a rebound
- When defending, always stand in between your opponent and the basketball hoop
- Whenever your teammate gives you a pick, use it
- After using the pick, look out for pick and roll plays initiated by your teammate
- After giving away a pass, immediately start running and expect a return pass
- Penetrate and aim to dish
Inherent basketball sense:
Inherent basketball sense refers to the intuition by which you move around in the court with or without the ball to appear in a favorable position for scoring. Basically, you know what you are doing without any plan or cooperation with your teammates and it results in scoring. That's inherent basketball sense. Yet, when you play with your inherent basketball sense, you should beware of a few things.
Things to be careful of when playing with inherent basketball sense
- When given the chance to cooperate, cooperate: You might have inherent basketball sense but that doesn't make you the commander on the field. Work with others on the basketball court. Chances are there are players on the field with the same sense and there will be chemistry going on between you and the other player.
- Don't set your expectations on teammates too high: Like I said, this is a gift and everybody thinks differently. Don't let your sense blind you and be disappointed if one play didn't work out.
- Take into account your own performance: Basketball sense is technically theoretical. You need to consider your actual performance of that day. In addition, you also need to take heed of your physical condition at that moment of the game.
- Go with the team: When the team is using acquired basketball sense learned from drills to play, go with the flow of the game. It is counter-productive to go against the team's plan and let your senses go wild.
